The present file/chapter and Consciousness and memory are strictly bound together, since managing the same matter with different purposes and different resources to highlight the main topic of this whole work: the connection between personal past and present, as well the possibility to amend oblivion as real powerful implement of medical profession. The subhead of a main Italian file, very important chapter of the Italian book, endorses an Italian pun derived from the classic Italian Synonyms and Contraries Dictionary by Niccolò Tommaseo, where on can find - with many and impressing explanations - the world to develop only as contrary of to embroil. It is a difficult rendering, but it can be paraphrased with these quotes:

An Italian article regarding anamnesis with a corresponding title - Quando la cartella clinica è terapeutica...Spazio a chi scrive [Space for the writer] in the November 2004 issue of Magazine Torino Medica (Turin Medical Journal) as auto-presentation regarding publications and presupposed methodology. The article was however subject to space restrictions and was therefore not as exhaustive as the author would have liked. Giornale dei Genitori

But many years before, some scripts appeared currently from 1960s in the magazine Giornale dei Genitori (Parents' journal) as column titled Childhood: a very difficult job, together with the fruit of a continuing collaboration with Montessori's Birth Center, and also with other magazines, besides as participation in various Conferences. Gradually some of them develop into new ones and/or became chapters of books.
Children? Parents? and their milieu? Reciprocally these topics - decidedly derived from direct CONCRETE experience and never only from simple theoretical studies - could have given enlarged towards more precise way of observation and synthesis: strictly intended to evolve CIRCULARLY straight and incessantly developing more incisive observation
and consequent explanation of facts.

Important amongst these articles, conferences, communications etc. was the series of conferences held in a Round Table on the subject of Violence against the child, promoted by the Italian Women in Medicine Association (Associazione italiana Donne medico). These public series of Conferences occurred at the main office of the Order of Medicine Doctors in Turin, and then were published on papers of the same name which title I am translating in English as I am doing for every Italian title. Conferences and debates were thereafter reorganized in more organic form and their second volume transferred into a “real” book: Childhood: times of mutability, complementary with another already edited book - which first edition's title was The complexes of the housewife - now entitled Domestic chores. Ergonomy and Psychology of a REAL work 
Than to improve and broadly consider this subject, a series of publications and conferences - also International - came into being in the field and in the discipline of Psychosomatic medicine, with its related topics as for a main example domestic accidents. Part of this wide collection, selected for printing in Italian books Domestic chores. Ergonomy and Psychology of a REAL work, Childhood: times of mutability). In fact successively raised this Web site to better organize and find a place where to upgrade all this material and references; and then in turn to put forward a fertile ground from which can issue printed editions either was the Italian book - Bambini di ieri = adulti di oggi. Adulti di oggi -> adulti di domani - and the English Children of YESTERDAY = today's adults. Today's adults ->Adults of TOMORROW: all - site and books -  presenting and explaining previously edited books, and improving these topics on making timely use of every new attainment - either cultural or better from first hand data - encouraging to prepare new editions of scripts and to open redesigned points of view in this field.

Childhood: a very difficult job? Individuality, development, evolution?

It is more than "banal" - rather frankly obvious - that parenthood should be considered a far-reaching and very difficult job. But not every people does be or will become parent or at least has to "manage" own or others' children. (look also on the Swiss site ASPI, and/or write to GeniAl)
Instead infancy - the impressive Latin word infans means not able to speak - and childhood are or were the absolutely unavoidable and basic steps for EVERY ONE: towards their whole existence. Therefore compared with the difficult and responsible - secoundary - parents'job, how more momentous is the primary so often more difficult - childhood's job! Therefore if often urgent is to help parents, how more fruitful is to help every one at least to a better knowedge of this prime, crucial job!

The tree is a convenient metaphor, but many other factors can be considered when referring to human existence and to every human activity: every element of human society is certainly not monolithic like a tree neither in space nor much less in time. Easier to use for explanation because their fixed being, trees can be proposed as a visual metaphor to simplify the factors which underpin every variable existence, including human.

1. Individuality: possibility and difficulty present or absent in the environment: ROOTS and the EARTH from which the real plant can well or defectively come to happen upon.
2. Development: with its regularity and concrete firmness the TRUNK strengthen itself growing on concentric year by year progressive ring-shaped adds.
3. Evolution: almost infinite in its differentiation and expansion: BRANCHES, LEAVES, FLOWERS, FRUITS, SEEDS.... The tree, like every living being which “grows” mostly or only in width, must be rooted well in the ground and must be surrounded by a nutritionally and climactically favourable environment in order to reach its full completeness. However, the animal and much more the human being does not only “grow” but “develop: phenomena which follow well defined PHASES, as predisposed paths towards changes (plural!) in a biologically determined sequence, guided by a typical rhythm of physiological developments modulated both by tempo and modality, regardless of all episodic changes that every true existence goes through.

As already explained on-line in the files of this site, and on-paper in the introductory chapters of Domestic chores. Ergonomy and Psychology of a REAL work, Childhood: times of mutability), and of Children of YESTERDAY =adults of today. Adults of today -> adults of TOMORROW, at first sight the beginning and base of the aforementioned arguments could be seen as small, insignificant, extremely private if not typically feminine, despite the real fact that occupying oneself with the existential complications of children’s development and with domestic life does involve not only insignificant and private situations as well to some degree the cornerstones of present society and future one.
Therefore and factually this not-childish matter
  1. involves a robust CONCRETENESS 
  2. argues against feeble, “airy” theoretical hypotheses;
  3. sets against inconsistent, ephemeral fashions and dictates;
  4. warns against episodic descriptions: not meaningful but silly over-sentimental, empty as generalizations, and then capable only of impeding any recognition of the concrete connections between cause and effect
  5. protects against ways of thinking unrealistic and dangerous: themselves cause of a direct “violence” (this was the basic argument expounded in the conferences on Violence against the child);
  6. defies and advances against the scorn and the repudiation of MEMORY;
  7. maintains finally IN FAVOR of completeness of FOUR dimensional beings: of TIME and not only in a poor and static three dimensional concept of space.
In fact, if a mature human being has to become so much powerful and versatile each stage of this development should leave behind - like a lesson well assimilated - a solid imprint. This integral fulfilment asks that each step of his/her completing could receive an acknowledgement of the typical, concrete and precise psychological and/or environmental NEEDS (n.b. needs not “desires”), an acknowledgement really active during each precise phase of his/her journey. 
Harmonious in its typical discontinuity each complex sequence manifests itself as physical changes in the body and, in concurrence with this, the prevalence of certain functions and relations, affection and feelings, activities and preferences... Also - phase by phase - this occurs to more easily activate a fitting constellation of instinct: a very mighty extra-personal power arousing at times to connect individuals with environmental elements. Each one of these groups of coordinating factorsconstellation: but compared with a musical complex it is worthwile not to change the by now classic term complex given by Freud more than a Century ago.
In humans in particular this preparation is lengthy and arduous. To a so extremely complicatedpast and present is intrinsic a peculiar fragility (why then this title: Childhood a very difficult job?), since that "complex job" is so much more difficult than that scholastic preparation of material/learning, both not attainable without adequate contribution from outside. scientifically is named network of connections between
A brief essential semantic note is to be recommended - and so here highlighted into a dedicated box - when using terms development and evolution: a suggestion so much substantial to need being shared not only in this file/chapter but also - exactly quoted - in other ones.
Evolution means something more broad in term on space and time than development: only entities, already present and still "involved" as buds, can develop, while after every moment the ambiance's stimuli can modify and also enhance every life towards - even unexpected and ploral - evolutions.
If every moment living beings have to act for maintain the internal homeostasis, nevertheless "well built", "well developed" sturdy organisms and minds can not only "accept" but also make the best on integrating themselves with the new situations: they can not only "learn by experience" since even transform every occurrence in  great creative forces which can promote - one could almost say GENERATE - evolution in new and totally unexpected directions. But going again back to the simple regular to sprout: how should "uncoil" its passages in a favorable coordination - preordained even if instead so "embroiled" in their coming next each other apparently discordant - without demanding, external variant, if not "acrobatic", assistance? 
Precise and mutable support systems are then needed for each phase, but they should themselves be flexible in responding to apparent irregularity, and concentrate carefully on the precise galaxy of emotion undergone at that moment. Already from its title, Childhood: times of mutability, describes and clarifies the physiological - carried out or disturbed - changes in expansion and  differentiation from the point of view of the developing subject, whilst Domestic chores. Ergonomy and Psychology of a REAL work considers the adult protagonist, contributor and participator in these developmental stages. However to be "adult" means  to have been child: not only assistance, home work and children rearing are directly concerned with the development of the successive generation, but as well with the good or bad possibilities to have undergone personal past phase, or rather with the "order or disorder" of the preceding generations.

From children of yesterday to adults of tomorrow...?

The process of development is so varied in its multiple integrations and depends on such a precarious balancing of body's physiology and completeness that it can easily be castrated, moreover if "polluted" by an alike previously mutilated environment. In connecting to rearing children obliged times-linked relationships - so changeable and overloaded with emotion, or better merging on the main field of generative instincts - each one of us is anyhow an unavoidable determiner of future scenarios: unpredictable and collective. The gradual development, the accumulation of each preparatory stage and the strengthening of the ground for its successor can, however, easily become mutilated in direct or indirect ways, leading to real emotional castration of the single individual or of entire populations.
Childhood: a very difficult job?
The galaxy of emotions which mark phase by phase of development are particularly varied and often shifting in the orbital of apparent contraries. These powerful yet fragile elements and the extremely lengthy preparatory stages, seemingly discordant - yet well coordinated by nature - are exactly those which serve to integrate gradually the power of the individual with discordant environmental factors which can be simplified on three orbits following each other towards superior steps: either personal, or regarding deeds, rules, facts, ideas, "things", or else people's relations and integration, "sentiments" and dealing. This difficult balance requires at the same moment a precise, powerful and well established external support system which centres on these emotional states, activated moment by moment and, above all, phase by phase. To an inattentive or forestalled observer these necessary delicate passages may escape detection and it in a way that unfortunately too often happens: in this way which could seem insignificant if not subliminal, crucial moments are ignored or blocked, leaving further cascading consequence. Thus extremely grave future consequences tangled up in - absurd - inextricable complications, can be induced almost inadvertently, almost unconsciously not by colossal errors, not by cynical ill-will but merely by the lack of swift help given to ignored phases of development and by lack of management of unaccepted emotions.
Unrecognised and/or unfulfilled precise contingent needs tend, then, to leave in their aftermath a precise, determined emotional incompleteness and/or deviation, not only in the present but with the above mentioned cascading effect on the further whole of individual’s existence, producing monstrosity - analogous to the disfunction of the organizer-inducer of the anatomic development in embryo described by Spemann and Mangold.
All these issues emphasize an united discourse insistently proposed, highlighting concepts of beginnings, of successive passages, of phases of development, of past, present, future,  organizers and cones of expansion which integrate and interact. Also insistently underlined however is how, when these phases meet obstacles, become vicious circles, which spin around themselves also blocking successive phases, if not continuing to aggravate towards pathological directions, branching off from the single individual and overcoming - in the present, but often well in to the future - entire existences: the affected subject and many around him.
As already outlined above, in every instant LIFE - in capital letters and merely as itself as the contrary of "dead" being - must be underlined by the particular chemical-physical continual changes in its internal state, leaded also by emotions as an important foreground of general reality of living being. "Emotions" are - by actual word definition - variable and also numerous; usually they follow one after the other in contrasting manner in the same individual body: in a matter of minutes this kaleidoscope of states alternate and often oppose “mood”, “attention” and also every psychosomatic form in interaction into individuals themselves and between individuals and their complete environment. Any way all this does not frame an ambivalent simultaneous ambiguity than a "tumult" into which emotional states separate each other by short, but not null delaying interval, initially uncoiled but prepared to be solved and recognized. Then instead of ambiguous uncertainty it should have a powerful function: it should just heighten tensions, which as elevated potential differences change into available hightened real voltage accumulators of energy.
But not ever it is feasible to engender more power, rather and on the contrary when discordant emotions are experienced as subjectively insoluble contradictions, as well when possible high-tension improvement muddles in an inextricable coil, then this differences of voltage can't be beard - even till stirring real seizures. Internal, unbearable conflicting “emotional experiences” moreover lasting from childhood, as at any age to try to artificially improve a not ready body for exceptional performances very often not only act against useful differences on voltage, but instead this to increase the potential energy explode in manifestation of possibly serious “psychic” symptoms, like anxiety or panic attacks or even fainting, and also in real dysfunction if not harm - till "broken heard death" - to internal organs: arteries, heart, digestive, endocrine systems, etc.
Not only emotions exist however: the human being is also aided in his interaction with his environment by way of INSTINCT, a powerful biological chemical-endocrine faculty (and not only), triggered by stimuli received by way of immediate sensorial reaction, a faculty which, compared to the “emotions” can affect a much larger scale of space and time and provoke much more intense reactions. The instincts are an immensely powerful system for the protection of individual existence and/or the species as they effect the action of coordinated and lasting hormones and not only the more ephemeral neuromediators and neuromodulators. The endocrine system is complicated and delicate and the unloading of energy - electromagnetic etc - once activated modifies every surrounding factor. If the instincts in action can cause enormous changes in one’s way of being and situate oneself dynamically in reality, they can either proceed in an appropriate way or in a chaotic, destructive way - see, for example how the same instinct either “saves” or “panics”, “to die from a heart attack” and certain miraculous survivals.)
In sum up, every living being’s emotions and instincts construct around himself what generically one can call “atmosphere”: in every moment - both in adults and children - this is a transforming factor, which either disturbs or acts as a link in the vast and beneficial chain of communication. 
And then: aroused and continually modified either by endogenic conditions or exogenic stimuli, the emotions follow on from each other and intersect not in hypothetical ways but by expressing themselves through their precise chemical and energetic bases: also these, like their name implies, in continuous modulated movement.
To specify again: every existence continually develops many ways to interact with the immediate present and in varied and continuous correlation with the environment, as already mentioned above recognisable even by their chemical structure as reliable “scientific” evidence of internal homeostasis. But not only this: alongside the chemical-physical visceral system of dynamic adjustment to the environment lie other relational systems - movements and sounds - which integrate every living presence. In particular in human beings exist words, exists to speak a special and sophisticated instrument for the transmission of information: even not only for "external" trasmission..
A fruitful fusion of mind and body, which continually transforms the capacity to sense emotions and feelings, can then turn everything into true EXPERIENCE: the only way to generate timely fitting personal CHOICES. But every real BEING isn't an isolated entity: a wrapping unabridged environment continually is moving around and interfering with. The common place description of Instinct is almost ever belittling these extra personal forces considered instead only from a restrict behavioral point of view. On the contrary INSTINCTS as mighty powers support - in not castrated organisms - the vital possibility to handle very timely also special happenings; instincts have the MAIN DYNAMIC TASK to connect immediately straight away the individual, its feelings and actions with the environmental stimuli.
Instinct is the inherent disposition of a living organism toward a particular behavior ... Instinct provides a response to external stimuli, which moves an organism to action....
Any way if Consciousness and memory file/chapter is so strictly related to this one - to have even some quotes shared together, besides just on regard of these problems - Sublimations: visual schemes and scientific explanation outspreadly defines from a different point of view and with more meticolous exposure the modes, ways and patterns through which every living being interacts with and into the sourronding milieu.

Pheromones

EVER had a feeling come over you that you just can't explain? Like suddenly getting all warm and fuzzy when you meet someone for the first time, while somebody else who looks just as good leaves you cold? Or experiencing a sudden pang of fear on a plane even though you're totally at ease with flying?
These seemingly unrelated and illogical human reactions may have a reasonable explanation after all, although one that not everyone will be happy to hear. They may be reactions to other people's pheromones

Other factors exist to complicate matters, atmospheres and relationships such as present contingencies and life in all its versatility and wealth of continuous variation and episodic change
In each living being chemical and energetic expressions of biological, powerful, too quick to become conscious INSTINCTS and EMOTIONS manifest themselves not only in gut reactions and experiential modifications but in objective factors as well: then surely not to be confused - as often does common place people - with the simple so called intuition, only a quick and ready insight, a somewhat more speedy as usual possibility to conclude thoughts and to recall deeds to mind. The main powers given by instincts and the antennae assured by emotions are not only behavioral, not only psychosomatic but also “somato-relational”. It is therefore inevitable, in circular and intersecting connection that each body receives and exchanges, that each body exudes emissions into the surrounding environment; uncontrollable emissions transmitting volatile chemicals called pheromones as well as other variants in magnetic field etc. transforming each simple living presence into an important factor of effective causality: thus perhaps the more important issue regards not the emission of pheromones but the receptivity and responsiveness in the receiving organisms.
It is then to point out that emotional doesn't mean “inconsistent”, a state to undervalue or ridicule: the emotions and their derivatives and effects are not adjectives meaning simple definitions, but are, in their concrete substantiality true nouns, which indicate the emergence and variation of ar least concrete chemical molecules not hidden inside the organism but spread around. These chemical expressions of internal states have often a short duration, a not so currently definite smell and so then often are difficult to be considered: notwithstanding - noticed or disregarded: why even people can use to smell as synonym of to foresee? - they are not only typically vital manifestations of the visceral-somatic sphere but their activation colors and gives meaning to every moment of global existence, also if as a rule far from perceptive consciousness. In an individual these internal autogenous transformations and triggered environmental modifications, gained by means of a well refined sensitivity - always been present or coming from a recovered awareness - can, or better should, transform every one of life's episodes into lasting EXPERIENCE and permit a whole consciousness to expand till accumulate into wisdom. Any way at the same time chemical emission of volatile embodiment of instincts and of emotions as well as every physical change determined by other variants in magnetic field etc into the surrounding environment transforms involuntary every simple living presence into an important source of change which should be taken into account.
Thus every living organism is at every moment - too often without being aware of it - a greater or lesser disturbing factor to those around him. On the other hand the organism can become part of a vast communicative chain mentioned previously: with his or her emotions each one contributes towards the building and redistribution of that which we generically call atmosphere; that diffuse atmosphere that is the base of the oral complex: that “oral complex” which can be summarily exemplified by those words which refer to “entrances”, “acquisitions”, completeness and also the whole series of words, verbs and nouns in which are presented concepts of togetherness, of diffusion, and with prefixes such as “con”… “syn…”, or with terms containing the idea of “fusion” , such as the previously given “diffusion”.

The idea of pheromones doesn't be a mere if not fantastic hypothesis: this is demonstrated straight away by their extensive commercialisation:
  1. to produce perfumes of high sexual impact, (see for example that cited in Athena Institute)
  2.  in agriculture to produce “organic” insecticides and antiparasites 
  3.  in veterinary science to produce real medicines, for example physiological tranquilizers to control stress in domestic cats and dogs.

The new weapons use chemical substances generated by the insects themselves. Unlike conventional pesticides, the chemicals, known as pheromones, do not damage other animals, nor do they pose health risks to people. Pheromones specifically disrupt the reproductive cycle of harmful insects. They also can be used to lure the pests into traps that help farmers track insect population growth and stages of development. In this way, farmers can reduce the amount of insecticide they need – spraying only when the insects are in a vulnerable stage or when their numbers exceed certain levels.

    Pheromones are chemicals emitted by living organisms to send messages to individuals of the same species. The class most widely explored are the sex pheromones produced by female moths which are used to attract conspecific males for mating. Bombykol, the sex pheromone of the silkmoth, was first synthesized in 1959. The first pheromone ever identified (in 1956) was a powerful sex attractant for silkworm moths. A team of German researchers worked 20 years to isolate it.... When at last they obtained a chemically pure pheromone, they named it "bombykol" for the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori from which it was extracted. It signaled, 'come to me!' from great distances.
    Evidence clearly indicates that a pheromone system exists, in insects at least. The question of whether the basic chemical communication exists in mammals has been harder to determine. An increasing number of studies, however, is showing that pheromones play a role in many species, including humans. The discoveries may provide a better understanding of mammalian communication, and also could lead to the development of new types of birth control or treatments to boost fertility.
    In dealing with mammals, however, scientists faced an entirely different problem. Compared to insects, whose behavior is stereotyped and highly predictable, mammals are independent, ornery, complex creatures. Their behavior varies greatly, and its meaning is not always clear....

This essay proposes only to draw attention to the question of pheromones in the human sphere; an argument full of questions and and subject to varied explanation and expansion. The ethological study of animals has developed in two different directions; that of aggression and of sexual function, above all female, including that which runs in conjunction with the latter, the arousal of the male. Few studies have explored other fields e.g. “learning”.
Regarding female sexuality the case-study of female rats bred in complete absence of male rats is particularly demonstrative; only minute traces of masculine urine is necessary to recover a normal oestrus, fertility and sexual “purpose” - meaning heterosexual - in rats otherwise “condemned” to a complete homosexuality and the lack of an oestrus cycle. Or, still in female rats, the spontaneous expulsion of fetuses and the reappearance of oestrus in pregnancy set off by the presence of a more “preferred new fertilizer" male. Few studies on the human field have been published up to now, the most noted being those regarding female sexuality: the synchronization of menstrual cycles in women living together, for example students in American colleges who share rooms.
Personal observations conducted over some (five) years can be added to this well observed phenomenon of human menstrual synchronization (corroborated by the synchronization of oestrus in female animals). I refer to the synchronization of menstrual cycles in myself and my daughter over a period in which we passed a certain number (average three-four) hours together each day collaborating together in a communal activity (I have the impression that this was a determining factor); and vice-versa to their de-synchronization when our occupations diverged. Also, in the animal sphere, the synchronization of oestrus in my two female dogs, despite variations in the frequency of oestrus (intervals of between six to eight months). In this case the interval, constant and regular - of six to eight days between the start of oestrus in the older dog and that of the younger - gives weight to the hypothesis that the “induction” in the younger was the work of “pheromones” emitted by the older dog. 
I do not present in this document an experimental work and therefore do not wish to expatiate with tables documenting the chronology of these pheromones, but for using this opportunity to propose various questions and hypotheses.
Sexuality, aggression, learning etc: it is probable that these substances have vast repercussions on all aspects of physiological behavior and relationships in the biological organism and within social gatherings. But why do we know so little about them? What inhibition or lack of curiosity has impeded us from bettering our knowledge through technical verification? Could it perhaps be due to the fact that their effect is felt directly in the centers of the brain which are home to a protopatic sensitivity, and being triggers of vegetative reflexes, we are not stimulated to take them into epicritic (and therefore “critical-rational”) consideration as we do with visual and auditory sensations? Or - mostly - are we not yet culturally permitted to take them into consideration, because if we admit the presence of these ways of communication, of involuntary interpersonal messages, we must also accept the impossibility of intentionally falsifying them? (Won't this be the reason for the real phobia against body odor and the huge market in deodorants?)
Addressing the female genital apparatus and its functions: could not the functions of the peri-vaginal glands (as well as all the apocrine glands of the body) be revalued in the light of this?
Could not the inhibition - maybe for psycho-relational motives - against the expulsion of secretion, having a pheromonic effect be amongst the causes of bartolinite? Furthermore, as the menstrual or oestral cycle can be “directed” by another’s female cycle, or oestrus induced by the odour of masculine urine, could not human fertility, in its various stages, be conditioned by the influence of pheromones in the environment, male or female?
To return to general problems: what could be the influence of substances - alimentary, voluptuary, medicinal, contraceptive etc - introduced into the body on the conditioning of other organisms via thus modified pheromones? What is the effect of cosmetics, detergents, localized contraceptives, pollution etc. even as artificial pheromones or disturbing agents?
To cite an interesting example: a normal insecticide spray with a pyrethrum base, though with a propellant and perfume not specifically named, sprayed on my female dog provoked erotic attraction and excitement in all the male dogs encountered, as if the bitch was on oestrus. I am sorry not to have been able to carry out a further experiment to see if the pheromone effect resulted from that one spray can and not from others of the same brand and type. Another episode concerns instead newborn babies about three days or so: all these babies in a hospital nursery burst into tears in unison at the moment when the floors began to be waxed for the Easter holiday cleaning.
And finally: perhaps the more important issue regards not the emission of pheromones but the receptivity and responsiveness in the receiving organism: therefore what influence can the endocrine state, the emotional state, stress, pharmaceuticals and socio-affective maturity or immaturity have in this sense?

Anthropology of the individual - term proposed for a new field, makeing an interdisciplinary approach to the human individual, in his whole somatic, psychic and spiritual complexity. We have built a nuber of models for the human being: the systemic model (Fig.1), the interface modelling (Fig.2) and (Fig.3), the integronic model (Fig.4: look below). 
Body aura - universal and fundamental form of existence, which accompanies the material existence and the fields existence (gravitational and electromagnetic field). We have approached the scientific study using the electrographic method of the living and non-living bodies, and we have established a semiology for the electromagnetic signals appearing in the bodies' auras. 
Information of the aura - fundamental property, characterizing the bodies aura - present everwhere -, similar to the bodies mass which characterizes the quality of substance, and similar to the energy, which characterizes the quality of field. To call emotions by their authentic name...

The real meaning of an instrument such as words lies - or perhaps only should lie (?!?) -  in the transformation of things, facts, situations of any type - including the selfsame emotions - from concrete to abstract, from imprecise, “plodding” concreteness to ethereal and effortless ways of expression and of reciprocity, not only easily interchangeable but also, in actual fact, capable of being precisely defined.
For all these reasons practical and/or scientific medicine cannot disregard or set aside the necessity for a very accurate anamnestic understanding of the present and the past (however remote) history of the patient in question. Here we further explore the title Anamnesis? A way for healing... and link to the sources and the aims of the books presented in the site and of the site itself with its dynamic refreshing in updating progress. 
The aim of words, even if often disregarded is - or should be(!) - that of giving a name to everything. Starting paradoxically from this new abstract basis, to give proper "names" can restore a renewed, precise concreteness: this is the great therapeutic gift offered by case history, by the simple taking of anamnesis: since a "banal" collecting of information, linking all to exact names, can gradually make possible the expression of - or even give rebirth to - complete relived experiences. - I know what I want to say, but I can’t manage to say it is the most common explanation . On the contrary:

Comment: The stolen language…:How much are harmful those feelings remaining inside to rot, those deep-rooted thoughts without voice! If accepted during an impartial hearing, interior occurrences instead to remain inside to rot can, gradually, come out from the depths of feeling and memory, finding with their true NAME their exact place in existence and in the wealth of lived experience. But development has an obliged natural own intrinsic regularity, a basic regularity which can be found in another enormous gift: the past gathered to live into MEMORY, into this well organized "hyperlink gallery" of gathered life stories but also in sum up where to reach a prepared deposit also for only presumed, not yet realized life agenda necessary occurrences. At this point intensive and not only psychological changes can take place: often so rapid and intense to seem…. “magical”. If this instrument of clarification and of condivision is undervalued it would take away the basic efficacy of Medicine as a practical profession and the scientific needs of medical research, but blind faith in this method without cautious attention could give illusory and deceptive results. Such enormous practical implement could in fact be in vain if the speaker is incapable to use it appropriately or from defects in translation in the listener. Words are used for pointing out "deeds" but not ever these deeds are the same for the interlocutors: every one believes to be understood or to understand when instead from this deafs' speech rises a series of misjudgements and fake promises. Besides: since words are instruments controlled by “will”, it is possible to tame them either by the speaking, maybe lying person, or by the almost on purpose deaf listening interlocutor: it is to say that language not only should be a valid instrument to unveil, uncoil, helping to develop, but alike it may be as much badly managed, badly interpreted if not also - on purpose - used for misrepresentation or deception [a synonym of involved isn't imbroglio/misleading meaning also TO DECEIVE/FRAUD?]

In technical terms the study of causes is called aetiology, while the study of their mechanisms of action is called pathogenesis; both these can be called true Science only when they are well verified and not hyper-simplified; when they are truly considered in their essence as well as in the dynamism of their evolution. It is only then that an abstract idea of pure Science passes towards eventual verification, repetition and calculation, comparable observation and, if it is the case, also experimentation.
One of the basic branches of theoretical medicine, together with doctrine and research is called, in every language, General Pathology. This science deals with all the varied and composite systems of cause, concomitant cause, situation and interaction. In sequence with this and with the study of normal Physiology lies the study of the dynamic homeostasis of living bodies in their well being and well managing till even evolution, as rather in their disharmonies. Rarely do isolated causes account to modify the normal performance of vital phenomena, in the normal interaction between these and those: instead much more frequent are the groupings - the galaxy constellations - of primary cause and concomitant ones and their varied and interrelated possibilities of action. Neither can a hypothetical state of health be considered as a certainty: health is not a static concept but is a moment hung in the balance, the delicate equilibrium of which defines the life of the subject.
A true physiology of every effectual existence cannot disregard together with the multiple correlation of the present also the various modalities enacted to perform it. Emotions, relationships, feelings, affection and subjective experiences forge part of the actual reality of the whole body condition also of its reality defined as psychological. Undervaluing all this undermines the basic efficacy of medicine as a practical profession and damages the scientific basis to recognize the true plurality of authentic logical links of causality. But not only the ephemeral moment has to be noticed: also a doctor himself however - as well every one who cares for or even only surrounds every person till from his/her first approaches towards life - is a real "person" with his/her own nature,  revealing himself as coming from his own past: also for and into him/her is ever acting out a good or bad past, well or badly experienced, well or badly integrated in the real "to-be" of the present moment. Stated again in more explicit terms: it is not enough to say that, if every data is not correlated with the psychological part and moreover PAST existence of the patient's examination and  with the knowledge coming from doctor's true experience, that every diagnosis which doesn't also contain the maximum of this type of information it cannot but give defective results.

Therefore how should we take carefully and critically the reciprocal use of language and the concomitant emotional state in every encounter between doctor and patient? How can we risk to misrepresent the occurrence undervaluing fundamental elements and/or overstating others? How misleading appeals confusing with physical symptoms? How on the contrary real deceptions are  accepted and rewarded as requests? How can colossal errors be avoided, instead to confirm and confirm them again by themselves in purely numerical successive statistics? And if mathematics is basic of every serious application of science, why then subordinate the mathematics of shifting algorithms to those of fixed statistics, so often full of badly chosen numbers?
Contradicted and Initially Stronger Effects in Highly Cited Clinical Research

Context Controversy and uncertainty ensue when the results of clinical research on the effectiveness of interventions are subsequently contradicted. Controversies are most prominent when high-impact research is involved. Objectives To understand how frequently highly cited studies are contradicted or find effects that are stronger than in other similar studies and to discern whether specific characteristics are associated with such refutation over time. Design All original clinical research studies published in 3 major general clinical journals or high-impact-factor specialty journals in 1990-2003 and cited more than 1000 times in the literature were examined. Main Outcome Measure The results of highly cited articles were compared against subsequent studies of comparable or larger sample size and similar or better controlled designs. The same analysis was also performed comparatively for matched studies that were not so highly cited. Results  Of 49 highly cited original clinical research studies, 45 claimed that the intervention was effective. Of these, 7 (16%) were contradicted by subsequent studies, 7 others (16%) had found effects that were stronger than those of subsequent studies, 20 (44%) were replicated, and 11 (24%) remained largely unchallenged. Five of 6 highly-cited nonrandomized studies had been contradicted or had found stronger effects vs 9 of 39 randomized controlled trials (P = .008). Among randomized trials, studies with contradicted or stronger effects were smaller (P = .009) than replicated or unchallenged studies although there was no statistically significant difference in their early or overall citation impact. Matched control studies did not have a significantly different share of refuted results than highly cited studies, but they included more studies with "negative" results. Conclusions Contradiction and initially stronger effects are not unusual in highly cited research of clinical interventions and their outcomes. The extent to which high citations may provoke contradictions and vice versa needs more study. Controversies are most common with highly cited nonrandomized studies, but even the most highly cited randomized trials may be challenged and refuted over time, especially small ones.

How not to misrepresent every fact when at present moment, every infinite and infinitely transitory “present moments” is perceived and rationalized as an absolute? When a way of thinking "bakes" itself in stagnant compartments representative of a world in which there are no links between cause and effect, no "before" nor "after", not "inside" nor "outside"? How can work appropriately such a mentality for which every “before” and every “after” are the same thing and the passage from one condition to another, only apparently describes a change, being in fact artificial, owed to pharmacological intervention... symptoms are misconstrued as all-absorbing “illnesses”? Without which the passage is impossible (inconceivable)...


My headaches have always been a constant companion in these years. I cannot say I’ve always had them because my earliest memories of them are during the period of high school, let’s say from the age of fifteen. I suffered from them at different times, not following any predictable pattern but thinking about them now the thing which never changed was their intensity: I remember them as being very strong. The sensation was that of an extremely debilitating pain, to get away from. They arose suddenly, I didn’t  then connect them to any triggering event; it was as if they came from nowhere. There was a before, without a headache and an after without headache: in the middle was the pain. But different from a normal sequence of time was the fact that the before and after were the same thing. In a certain sense you couldn't even speak of a before and after but simply of absolute facts: if 1 is the condition of without headache and 0 that of with, you could describe it in this way: 10101010101010. The passage from one state to another, only apparently described as a change, was instead something artificial, owed to pharmaceuticals. For 0 to return to 1 the use of a painkiller was necessary. Without that, the passage was impossible (inconceivable) it was as if  “1” once immersed in pain couldn't recognize the possibility of returning to a painless state. In substance the previous state no longer existed. In reality it had never existed, as the successive state didn't exist either: the headache became an absolute fact and as such had no cause and much less a remission in time: it had to simply disappear as quickly as possible not be there anymore and the only way was to intervene with pills as quickly as possible. There wasn't the concept of illness: cause, development and remission, with the relative temporal sequence, but only two unconnected facts (two monolithic blocks) in which the painkiller entered as an external factor. This explains why the danger of abuse and the inevitable side-effects didn't come into it. The possibility of harm to other vital functions was ignored or maybe cowardly accepted: the head was one thing, the pain another, the pill made the pain go away, the rest: nothing (all, as in stagnant compartments, was representative of a way of thinking, of a mentality in which there are no links between cause and effect, there is no before or after, inside or outside).
Today things have changed. The pain is variable both in intensity (also decidedly less than it was in the past) and how it starts. It always has a cause (which is often investigated) and lasts from a few hours to a day (rarely more). Sometimes it goes after sleep, sometimes after a dream (a dream can also start it), sometimes after a thought (also a thought can  bring it on), sometimes it seems to be caused by unexpressed anger or from physical tiredness, or from a painful memory different from that of before. Meaning that in that moment the pain seems a way of transit, almost like a ferry which transports from one shore to another (see the concept of  Resilience.). It’s obvious that the use of drugs becomes doubly damaging both from their nature as “poison” for the body as well as for the fact that they impede the transit, or accelerate it artificially, impeding all those interior modifications (at this point I’d say also biochemical) which instead need time and the right ways to work.
Here then, different than before, the correct way to represent it becomes a numerical sequence in which pain intervenes as a question mark (due to the innumerable unknowns which constitute it) and in which every number represents the result of a series of internal and external intervention: ….._2_3_????? _4_7_???_8_12_?....  Even if in its excessive simplification this last sequence is as clear as the monotone of the first (101010101010….), which I have intentionally taken from the  binary language of  computers, it’s assigned to a machine but certainly not to a human being. that returns to the surface with difficulty. In  every case the feeling is that not only will the pain pass shortly but that it must absolutely develop. More than anything else is the feeling that once passed my being after will be improved.

Memory and medicine: time “regained”: past reconstructed and sequences re-activated<*h3> Medical practice depends on various branches, which are either solely theoretical in basis or useful to differentiate between knowledge and practice relying upon various criteria, but also following concrete approaches more or less logical or ... commercial. A pediatrician has to care children but not only sick ones: he has to look over and if necessary try to optimize their developmental phases beyond to heal rather than simply alleviate contingent symptoms. Alike a effective generalist doctor must watch round off till the patient's childness to can supply if its previous development results as defective. In this way in its primary form of hygiene and prevention or in its secondary form of therapy, medicine going through variable fields of pathogenic (and/or salvific) causes and concomitances must take into account the true physiology of the whole existence: this going through must not disregard the multiple correlations of the present nor the various ways in which it was realized in time.
But if, as written above, trees can be proposed as a visual metaphor to simplify the factors which underpin every variable existence, furthermore human lives, assigned to a more powerful extent, exist other factors which cannot be compared to trees: the development in terms of space towards increasing openings to be mastered and in term of future to be pre-pared - even improved by new main far-reaching EVOLUTION - has for Nature its own intrinsic regularity. But this basic regularity related to TIME can be again found in another enormous gift: the past gathered to live into MEMORY. But this gift opens other and surprising hopes and chances: well stored and recoverable biological or better genetic memory holds not only all the lived pastpre-ordained way - the genetically predisposed steps even when unfortunately missed. Nothing is lost, neither events nor phases of development ignored or denied: at any time all the sequence of facts and the route towards optimal maturity may be re-found and re-activated, till a successful outcome. Each existence can never be taken as fixed, as unalterable: we are not only have at disposal three but FOUR dimensions.
Before reaching existential completeness in the present moment have had we, or should have had, to follow well defined phases of development?
These "phases" exist by themselves in established biologically turnover through determined sequence: thus, the galaxy of pathogenic and salvific factors becomes more and more variegated and the - really lived or badly interfered or missed phases - can become at any age regained: protagonist of a better and more true physiology of existence as it have been completed through the very passage of well organized TIME or after a re-lived recover.
How can a doctor work if this is ignored? Stated in more explicit terms: in approaching the patient it is not enough to only take into account feelings or the so-called psychological factors of the moment: any diagnosis and any therapy, not involving meticulous work into the patients' past, can only be superficial and therefore maybe substantially erroneous. 
In science the unexpected which supplies a lot of information is called serendipity: so a careful, attentive and well orchestrated case history does not only serve as a fundamental instrument for diagnosis - often much effective than sophisticated, if not invasive instruments of analysis - but may also even be transformed into - and here lies the unexpected gift! - a therapy. This may be the case when the taking of the anamnesis does not stop at the banal question-response stage but continues... until positively becomes the cardinal element of a sub-speciality distinct from psychiatry, like psychoanalysis.
There are illnesses which impinge on the physical body in various ways but there are also very numerous and debilitating real - not imaginary ! - illnesses which afflict the non-physical part of the individual. Neuroses and psychoses are neither imaginary or mysterious nor to be combated with willpower (???), or almost with superstitious cures or “specific medicine”.
It is likely that a state of oblivion - in itself pathogenic - covers serious sufferings felt to be insupportable, but not only grave and terrible events can act as obstructive traumas on the existential journey: it is an apparently easy way to try - through leaving behind - to annul or at least to forget the disturb to be hidden. This search for oblivion is neither a defect nor a weakness; but is on the contrary something like an - even not conscious - deliberate, wearing and interminable censure which carries along an avalanche of consequences which impoverish the self, giving sources of further risks: in any case establishing a sure lack of well being and of properly to behave.
If it has been stated that folly is the oblivion of a great sorrow, it is not automatic that this loss of awareness and authenticity should be for ever an inevitable destiny. Just this is the area where an important specialization of Medicine as doctrine and profession, Psychiatry, should occupy itself, but usually moreover in a symptomatic way or at least simply on striving to deepen awareness only of the current interrelations and personal present experiences: while its parallel psychoanalysis has the assignment to reconstruct the person as should have been.
Not an only symptomatic cure for neuroses - and also for most psychoses - then exists but is hard and often very painful: starting from the beginning and helping to relive and overcome even highly destructive traumas can something as "surgically" reinstate what is lost or damaged and can permit - to whom is really enough brave to accept it - to find again and then rebuilt psychologically together with the not fulfilled childhood the present real world to inhabit into and on which to perform.
But not only emotional disorders, not only parents/children misunderstandings can cause "great sorrows" so great not to be borne; not only emotional conflicts can disorganize the personality and its system of relation, also the body has to be considered, also every bodily occurrence has to be recovered. Psychosomatic has the knowledge to listen also bodies; psychosomatic can also go more forward in the direction of recognize and care traumas hurting and wounding bodies: with its know-how one can even understand extreme psycho-physical situations, special suffering as these derived from serious violence and from harming deeds unforeseeable in peacetime and/or perpetrated against children in apparently normal families.

Psychoanalysis as basic implement of effectual Medical Science...

It is likely that oblivion till a sort of mental fainting - even in itself pathogenic - for immediate life-saving covers facts almost totally unbearable. But when this oblivion seems at its most deep and dark, sometimes shocking spurts forth of vivid memory allowing a breakdown in the efforts of censure: uplifting bouts of awareness not only as verbal “memories” but as entire flashbacks - in film directors terms. Notwithstanding it is just when these flashbacks emerge that arouses the very effectual possibility of success on a psychiatric therapy, as long as that therapy is based on  unhappily developed children - who have simply to recuperate defective passages - or ex-children missing a great part of their life, and even victims of terrible experiences could have been received and helped to re-live and resolve traumas, till to become healthy persons, availing further at its plenty of social and historical state of  “responsible citizen”. Considering then the patients' side, it is to point out that such vivid recalled memories come neither by an effort of will nor through particular mental capacity, furthermore nor by “magic” even it might seem so, since often mental or visual remembers are accompanied by genuine, unexpected bodily manifestations.
Summarizing if folly is the oblivion of a great sorrow  - by itself again later damaging - not always “badly conducted development” or “traumatised infancy” goes only on this compelled way: also in the worse cases medicine can propose a therapy, which not only treats symptoms, but acts towards the restitutio ad integrum [restoration to original condition] with the end prospect of a recovery which can be traced back to the reconstruction of existence and essence to how it could have been and should be. A process like this is ever difficult, often shocking and erratic in progress    and not doubtful precepts. Not when one can only work as “alleviator of contingent symptoms”, even having in charge extremely severe cases - but only if provided and allowed by patients themselves - a doctor who seeks a real cure can restore their cornerstones to wisdom and awareness, to a renewed life in its wholeness. Helped and not chased this reliving of experiences can spontaneously clear dulled minds: but a quite obliged requisite to attain this project is that
I cannot keep all things straight. the remembering goes back and forth  and not straight in a line... Taking very shaky steps in a crooked and zig-zagging manner, approaching and avoiding the awful truth t hat this happened... but knowing there was a cause for my pain, and that this cause makes sense, allow these multi-level memories... [even if and  when] the inner work, the therapy has lost [inevitably] its sweetness... So hard to go back and forth between therapy and life - whatever that is...
Regained, this possible goal doesn't stop: to validate such a prolonged and painful journey a continuing aftermath advances by itself to integrate in an otherwise unthinkable evolution an improved and maybe evermore improving personal potentiality of consciousness and acting. And this is not without ulterior recompense: the journey undergone and clarified by patients previously engaged to rescue from the "bad side", otherwise also carrying out an intimate knowledge, offers up for every one and mostly for whom watched at this redemption an extremely important source of unexpected information and awareness: to accommodate and to understand enjoys a deep cultural enrichment on a personal and professional level.
[However ...] the knowledge of how “to be” in intimate relationship [gives] ... an empowering explanation of how we act in our offices, as “neural architects”, reshaping and remolding our client’s brains, and engaging so deeply that the work profoundly reshapes our brains as well.
In other words this growth may not stay only personal; rising above even terribly traumatizednot only recuperate themselves but be fundamental sources to others of wisdom and awareness. At whichever age these children with their - conscious of accepted, relived and resolved - experiences may g9ve to every one q enhanching extent of real previously unknown knowledge
Existing alongside the very real catastrophic traumas and violence suffered at origins of a crippling mental pathology, but there are nonetheless also “little” damages which interfered a crucial stage in development, which have harmed the process of harmonization of affective, sociological and intellectual maturity. As expressed above and pointed out in many other files/ chapters, predisposed paths towards changes (plural!) have to move on a biologically determined sequence, guided by a typical rhythm of physiological developments modulated both by tempo and modality: situations damaging this sequence not only alter a precise crucial stage but affect every one after it, triggering a cascade of worsening errors. It is mistaken however to undervalue that much more often pathogenic cause of hidden disturbance regards inner difficulties and not only painful facts, not external traumas but unbearable interior experiences meaning emotions considered unacceptable because too much in contradiction with other emotions. In other words: assuming that mental pathologies are formed from lasting, fanciful compensations it is to be noted that not only as cause of mental illness exist violence and/or dysfunctional rearing or lack of attachment. there  Unresolved difficulties in the contradictory management of inner emotions also can act, without considering the even more serious future consequences of when crucial moments of development are absent-mindledly interfered with what seems subliminal to not enough careful people.


The prospect of recovery for every mental pathology can exist, but the possibility of putting on the same level the cure of all patients, suffering either from unbearable harms or from subjectively unsolvable internal conflicts due not only to traumatizing occurrences as much by personally unacceptable emotions is at the base of the great discovery, the great gift given us by Freud: the psychoanalysis. It is this regained respect for all initial situations that has permitted such enormous progress in theory and practice. This not only offers to psychiatrists the valid possibility of obtaining real recoveries, but also guarantees continuing contributions to the general store of  biological and socio-anthropological scientific knowledge.

Any therapy which seeks to be more than a masker of symptoms must in essence be a restorer of full physical integrity: restitutio ad integrum. Then: finite or infinite analysis? Could psychotherapy have an end? When this sub-speciality can declare the patient healthy? When - or as many chatters say - "never"? When - or as more silly chatters tell - this is a path to feed an everlasting dependency?
Or on the contrary every one, no matter if very ill, can choose or change therapist and therapy method - as a person wrote having survived terrible experiences followed by many, many years of unsupportive, devalidating, re-traumatizing and then refusing "that" therapy - look at the file /chapter Consciousness and memory, parallel of this one, also with some duplicate subhead:
skipping all my developmental phases might disqualify me from being heard? but again.... NOT.

Any way really it is to say that - as in every field of medical cares - compliance could be achieved or missing compliance enacted: a true freedom of choice doesn't oblige anyone to fulfill completeness,  to enter in a full redesigned way of life and to rebuff fake affective feelings.  Nobody should be artificially compelled to accept incompatibility between attachment and losses, between real nature and parents' manners and willing, between inborn love and loyalty for parents and relatives even if ascertained as depraved .... Freedom of choice often opts for accept weakness, freedom of choice doesn't regard only "heroes":  not to bear more suffering can prefer dependency and symptoms instead a difficult entry onto something as a very NEW world where to utter a quite new personality. People can delay even for ten and ten years, people can stop totally therapy or drag it out as it could be something as a dependency without searching its very effect.

"Never"? In sum up definitely on the contrary different and deferred outcomes can exist. "Never" or "infrequently" doesn't regard "every" concerned people: sooner or later unforeseen horizons of consciousness, awareness and... wisdom can open up for whom have undergone difficulty, blocks, relived traumas, reopen sufferance: sooner or later for whom had had the endurance to disavow step by step their previously wearily built and maintained defense systems - see Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense - their pathological compensations. Else therapists don't be the unique "masters" of real patients' life: at every moment helped therapy can stop, but an autho-therapy can go on by itself - as written above - towards continuing aftermath advances to integrate in an otherwise unthinkable evolution bettering  potentiality of consciousness and acting.
Summarizing: a total true, plenty personal condition can be regained
  1. when memory, present and misaligned possibilities are realigned and harmonized;
  2. when the individual truly reaches his age, not in years but in terms of EXPERIENCE;
  3. when form, attitudes, energies, responsibilities, emotions and instincts finally make themselves available;
  4. when finally one can go beyond a simple completion of the oneself existence towards future prospects of not only psycho-social restitutio ad integrum, also bringing to all the contribution of these “special”, totally lived experience.
Whereas: perhaps if more often and mostly if sustained by PARTICIPATION, the worst memories are no longer enemies; no matter what terrible facts they acknowledge, they become something to change into "jackpots": they become indeed very lucky occasions to not only "silence the monsters" - finally for ever -  but also to can turn the previously unbearable sensations into deep, enriching EXPERIENCES. Conscious experience is the way to reach the fullness of existence. Consciousness of one's past - no matter what sort of past -  substantially contributes to determine what is defined as the depth of a person, opposed to inconsistency and fatuity. Moreover, each consciously borne experience not only pertains to - the after all banal - reason, but it is the very root of true RIPENESS and WISDOM for the subject, besides being fount of vital culture for all of us.
(The famous Shakespeare's quote: Ripeness is All means exactly this.)

Here it must be POINTED OUT again and again two Freud's great - in sum up his greatest - DISCOVERIES: as written above as well re-affirmed in other files/chapters - see damaged development amnestic removal of bad events is the sickening cause of mind illnesses, but, often and also perhaps far-reaching, are inner conflicts and unpreparedness rising from not well developed phases and from mixed emotions not yet ready to be geared. So the first of these discoveries is Freud's forethought regarding the equalization between TRAUMATIC FACTS and UNACCEPTED EMOTIONS in the patients' care, an equalization which is the very basic gift given to all by Freud's PSYCHOANALYSIS. To better explain: it was the REGAINED RESPECT for both situations which allowed such enormous improvements in theory and practice. Exactly this liberal respect - faced with trauma memories together with "fake" dramatizations (aka "neurotic symptoms") based "only" on typical but mismanaged developmental emotions - can be such a mighty help for the psychiatric possibility of HEALING, for the general Medicine, and for the general amount of psychological and CHILDREN REARING knowledge.
A typical common place belief disparages psychoanalysis as a sure way to give rise to an everlasting attitude to dependence, confusing this basic tool - just on the contrary designed to really recognize dependencies to be nullified - with every other kind of therapy, with whichever other technical or spontaneous condition of aid, support, counseling, assistance, listening...: rather even disowning this first and main purpose.
In fact more than a Century ago this was already the main... reversal which separated Freud and Breuer not only regarding their theories but also themselves as associates doctors (1889-1892): till then, the term TRANSFERENCE should have been considered, and its real meaning correctly defined. And so, on the contrary of common place banality, psychoanalysis becomes the ONLY actual way to allow whoever as sick as he/she is  to go into one's own TRUE life, into one's TRUE present time, near and in TRUE relationship with real, not "imagined" present living persons and occurrences.Two are the mainstream ways opened by Freud on behalf of Medical cares, and Scientific knowledge for everyone to better manage oneselves, to better care for children's life and rearing, to better reveal an expand past memories:
  1. the equalization between traumatic and unaccepted emotions,
  2. the awareness to admit and therefore to feasibly UNTIE the dependencies, when recognized in their true shape of TRANSFERT(S) - surely plural.
Therefore it is compelling to take the opportunity to give a drastic explanation apt to define which are the real "facts", not to precise only the semantics of word as a way to speak.

2 : the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object (as a psychoanalyst conducting therapy)

On regard of this term - transference - so often so much misused since confused with dependency - it is urgent to get some explanatory notes, since this redirection can be enacted not only for memories of real deeds and persons, as much also for "lived" even conscious egocentric imaginations.

To transfer, as sounds the latin word trans-fero, could be trans-lated as equivalent to to transport, to conveysomething from there to here, and also - in this psychological abstract meaning - to mix-up present person(s) and occurences with a reality, with a person, wih a situation of the past, or even with inner self-centered feelings.
Transference and countertransference, Therapy is not an ordinary social exchange between individuals. Instead, it is quite different. Consider Freud's original psychoanalytic therapy. He would sit with his back to the patient while the patient lay on the couch and free associated. Imagine talking to a friend who would not answer you! One of the characteristics of therapy is transference, where the patient begins transfer the feelings which emerge in therapy to the therapist. So, the patient may come to like or to hate the therapist. In psychoanalytic therapy, such transference is expected and is a sign of progress on the part of the patient.
All this so assumes the shape of a little private psycho-drama where the NEUTRAL, passive part is performed by the care-giver who, instead to being unaware compelled into, can willing and conscious accept to act the part lived or re-lived by the patient: here playing the role of a stage show director, in his/her ever changing psycho-drama. This explains why transference is the contrary of dependency: the task of a skilled and aware therapist is not to be ever compassionate and affectionate, to become the contrary of "bad" parents, but instead to be able to recognize how much professional task can be facilitated by the intense, actual emotions risìng utterly into an ever changing unconscious and spontaneous scenario. To use this possibility requires more an actor's skill than sympathy: not for being an "actor" as synonym of "liar", but "actor" as able to follow the director's orders even if undefined planned. The transference becomes then a PRIVILEGED SET where patient's past occurences and actual flights of fancyall environmental involved people. Summarizing: to exercise this professional task does NOT consist of an only enduring "to listen" mere words, but of a powerful and lively to assist as co-protagonist the patient's incoming memories and fancies: so psychanalysis became the UNIQUE way NOT to foster dependency but to really solve it. Not dumped on present interpersonal relations this past emotional occurrences can be observed coming back almost directly, to be directly "played" together. Knowing and living more than eye-witness such real fragments of an unrelated existence gives an authoritative possibility "to catch" symptomatic interpersonal misconducts: on behalf of a real powerful and actual professional care pointing towards a REAL new patient's health but also supplying continually to who cares with renewed powerful gifts of knowledge.

Any way in this ever changing sets and scenarios, rules of protagonists and co-protagonists every "tranference" can disappear, the true possibility of a total healing towards REALITY can rise and grow.
  1. Nature and health and true life are ever changing, ever NEW;
  2. health doesn't know transference;
  3. "normality" is ever to be interested, searching, longing for, to be stimulated by novelties and to foster new inner ever broad feelings and awareness.
Instead every possible entangled "transference" arises and establishes only in pathologic situation, derived from a pathological development, giving whenever source(s) to other repetitive mishaps. A mocking paradigm of such a never lasting self-referencing is easy to be read in Knots - They are playing a game... by R.D. Laing: mightily pointing out to confirm that a wanting past, a selfish bulk lot of worn-out believing cannot take advantage of knowledge of facts, not can translate them in real memories, not at all to construct whichever awareness.A wanting past doesn't adhere to actual reality and relations, a wanting, wrapped whole life so continue to "shrink" itself and to coil feelings in repetitious "transferred knots", in caricature blockages and in blocked ties.
Unfortunately then this file/chapter together with this whole work have a more "complicated" task to comply: not only should describe the natural, physiological and progressive - unhurried and freeing - "to blossom" as difficult job of childhood - Childhood as static deed doesn't exist: it indicates disengaging changes is the foreword of the Italian book Infanzia: tempo di mutamenti. It is on purpose this insistent use of words beginning by "com" or their synonyms: a mandatory to recognize and disconnect worthless complications and incoming  - or past - harms oblige to re-open till origin "unfold" complexes and so resort them to their specific task.Just to emphasize how to give up such - abusive - transferred selfish-based significance opens finally the way to the TRUE LIFE, to a healing road towards a real - not imagined - existence, the first subhead of this file/chapter puts forward condensed the main concepts of this whole assignment:to coil reflects to involve: is it the contrary of to develop? At a good side: only wrapped buds can thrive; but also to uncoil embroiled matters can assist development once restored past, since - at a bad side - a synonym of involved is mislead /embroil meaning also FRAUD.

Relived memories any time can come to the surface: more often if provided and well-directed, if supported by participation, they not only cease to be inimical, not only silence at long last and forever the "monsters", but, highly redeeming, can even transform earlier unbearable sensations into true, profound, enriching EXPERIENCES. On the contrary: if these relived memories/evidences are NOT collected, NOT believed or - even worse - derided and opposed, taken for delirium or slanders, in their turn aggravate the sleep of reason and at a wide range breed new self-reproducing monsters, not manageable, often irretrievably destructive. Seeing  a book review, badly written but profound... talking about the traumatized patient seeing in the therapist a defective "holding container"... then talking about what happens when the therapist reinforces a false self...: how destructive it is to the patient. Many people... many many... there is distress... reaching out... the person on the other end does not want to hear it or so it seems... So the  patient is harmed by the fact that she switches back into another personality... one who is perceived by the helping person as "now you are yourself again... [My therapist]suddenly became very dangerous to me... emotionally abusive, and I decided that I didn't deserve so much bad treatment. I should leave her. I suddenly knew it was time to stop therapy rather than being destroyed by therapists. I was very unwilling and frightened to try again...
But not only one's heed - even "fake-love" - could be "tranferred" on "persons": also not human, rather every kind of formal entities can collapse into similar failure of reality; and if the fashion to "use and throw" is surely to be condemned, this does NOT regard when the CONCRETENESS of deeds, emotions, opinions is confused with static mental images. Therefore also on objects, situations, fixed pseudo-feelings, fixed belief... empty tranferts without future can interfere till to intercept perceptions, awareness, possibilities. Absurd, fixed transferts disable full existences to persist obstinately in following and searching and recognizing only repetitive ways: and this continues to occur in an everlasting incongruity with echological and personal homeostasis, since NEVER SYNTONIZEABLE with the ever mobile outer environment and inner body's existence. In these deteriorating vicious circles, persons, feelings, situations, objects go on endlessly UNCONSCIOUSLY to remodel old feelings into FETICHES: it is to say that emotions and opinions become themselves new SUPERSTITIONS instead to stand for  "warm-hearted memories", for real awarness, or for hypothesis getting through to new experiences.
The dissolving of transferts, the loss/renunciation of meanings arbitrarily given to undue transferences, to shift from emotions only SUBJECTIVELY referred to something and someone on something else and someone else, opens at least the way to TRUE LIFE: if not to the joy of livingFOURTH DIMENSION of the lived time is the way to the fullness of existence: in fact the consciousness of one's past and one's emotions - no matter what that past and those emotions were and still are - substantially contributes to determine what is defined as a person's density (as opposite to fatuity, inconsistency). Every consciously borne experience not only pertains to the - after all banal - reason, but it is the root of true MATURITY, capable of personal WISDOM: from which can emanate a fount of vital culture for all. (This is more or less the meaning of the celebrated line by Shakespeare RIPENESS IS ALL, King Lear, Act v scene v)
As written above, typical commonplace ideas disparage psychoanalysis as a - wrongly presumed - sure way to give rise to an everlasting attitude to dependence, a typical commonplace prejudice confuses this basic tool of effectual Medical Science with every other kind of therapy, with whichever other technical or spontaneous condition of aid, counselling, assistance, listening. On the contrary psychoanalysis is the ONLY actual way to allow anyone - no matter how ill he/she is - to enter one's own TRUE life, one's TRUE present time, in contact and in TRUE relationship with real, not "imagined" persons and "occurrences" in an authentic present decontaminated from past emotions and references: at least to LIVE and not vegetate, lost in isolated world and in the void of one's fancies, expectations and fears. In other worlds: also even through perhaps the worse suffering and/or confusions every time and feeling can be reconnected with a fruitful conscious experience: i.e. the complete managed ownership of the whole accepted personal fourth dimension gives not only a simple health but confirms the evolutive way towards a renewable human "deepness".
Differently from any other kind of therapy or aid - however long and painful - psychonalysis for its very nature of revelation of transferts (strictly plural), can only GIVE BACK and NOT rob a person of the capacities for recognition and decision. This possibility is chronologically the first great discovery by Freud, opening the possibilities of distinguishing and therefore resolving dependences once identified by their very nature of TRANSFERT.

The rag-and-bone shop

Apropos of the word "transfert" a flat specification - more factual than semantic - is MUCH NEEDED to resolve a series of equivocations and false expectations. As explained above - and also in the file/chapter Consciousness and memory - the word, derived from Latin, literally means to transfer, that is to say to transport, to convey something from there to here, including relived emotions that are unconsciously piled up by people or objects from the past, or by present fantasy on people and situations - instead separate, differential, NEUTRAL, moreover unconscious and all together unaware. (All this muddle of "times removed", fantastical attributions, pseudo-rationalistic misunderstandings is poetically described and evidenced in the jocking chapters of Knots by R.D. Laing.) Whoever its object is, he/she as object is entirely overcharged with other's lived memories without understanding neither their nature nor their reason, whereas the subject tends to react, deceived in his/her expectations and pseudo-convictions: every moment of such pseudo-relationships can only give cause to an endless talk to the winds - where from very tenacious entangled dependences derive. On the contrary, when the speaker is in a position to accept that a transfert is being enacted - as did Freud in contrast with Breuer - it becomes possible to re-transform such a sterile meeting between incommunicable entities into a factive dialogue: or even much more to help actively the "protagonist" on recognizing his real intents, willings, needs, memories...
Chronologically this has been the Freud's first GREAT DISCOVERY, which sanctioned the incompatibility between his method and that of Breuer (1889-92): in a practical sense all this presupposes that one is in a position to consent to play the part of an actor, if not of a dummy in an inner performance by the person who plays an active part - in the case of therapy: the patient. Performing the actor in this series of private psychodramas impede them to be fixed as "dependences" and "ties", but it is not always an easy task for a ... not "professional actor".
Notwithstanding just these difficulties are very rewarding and give another advantage: the conscious commitment places the therapist in an extremely privileged position: under his/her eyes and in his/her emotionally to play actor role, the doctor in charge can not only apprehend but also personally ASCERTAIN the situations the patient/producer not only "tells" but also expounds and presentifies - unconsciously, but in a very effective manner.
Should one comply with the patient's relived memories and accept not to take an active part in them in a misunderstood bond? As Freud discovered more than a Century ago only in this way the true possibility of RECOVERY from a past no longer gangrening materializes. And then, only when every transfert has DISAPPEARED, one can move towards a full admittance to the true renewed personality. NORMALITY, relating to the present changeable reality - see the whole file Consciousness and memory - is NEVER structured into static formations, into interpersonal relations endlessly entangled in themselves - see again the playful paradigm on their indelible
self-referentiality in Knots by R.D. Laing. Only when coming from a faulty past adhesion to reality, and recognizing the novelty of RELATIONS - in their mobile and enriching interchange - one finds himself/herself plunge into from one moment to the next one, no more contracted and enrolled in repetitive pathological transferts, in grotesque blocked knots and blocking ties.
Could allow then a true recovery prevent badly digested memories, give the faculty to replace bad memories and/or inconsistent imagination with lived suffered EXPERIENCES?
Why is it instead so longlasting and not ever granted for a so from a Century tested therapy to break such an extreme solitude, in its selfishness and incapacity to acknowledge one's role in the world?
Why is so unfair to suppose that it could be simple and effortless and quick and granted to come out from a repetitive, narrow, monotonic past any way believed to be the undisputed source of foreseeable convictions? Why seems so painful give up the funnel-shaped structure of the "pathologic"? Why disparage oneself freedom and dignity and mind in favour of an always hierarchical world in its superiority/inferiority, and magic or anyway fideistic in its substantial?
In reality it is biased to simplify and naively think that to convoy towards a "normality" - never previously known nor even imagined - should be ever rewarded and at first thanked: it is fearful to manage a future without a sure "guidance", it is also difficult and heavy to renounce to turn own's mishaps against external pseudo-enemies... For the actor/therapist is hard personally to not fall not enough ready in persecutory sets where "dependency" is changed in persecutory disapproval, nor can one deceptively confide that it could be easy to "sacrifice" the illusion of being capable to stand as "prophet" (more or less of "woe" or of operator of "sensational miracles").
On the matter of fact this can be accomplished, but only with an unpredictable lot of time and patience and only if the "actor rule" could be well played without surrender not only when the director/patient requires a rule of a fake-guru but also when it should match as a persecuting "enemy".
To set off in an open, new, varied, variable and diversified world rouses dismay and an anxious wish for denial, hence it is not even desirable to accelerate the entrance into the wide breath and mutability of NORMALITY - viable but unpredictable. But meanwhile - following the road to vix medicatric Naturae - the process tends to go on by itself autonomously. When accepted, little by little the frightened dismay dissolves into more bearable, realistic bewilderment.
When false transferts cease to occupy all the room available in an egocentric confusion between the inner self -  not recognizong himself/herself - and a non-existent outer - representing merely a mirror of it - the slipping away from this poverty of second-hand recycling at last can allow true choices. When the waste of a badly digested past or impositions do no longer authorize the empty prophesying, then attention, pre-cautions, vigilance find their place again.
Then true affections, true sense of responsibility appear: TRUE not only because they are in agreement with personal taste and style, but also because they calibrate from time to time according to the - by now well recognized and assessed - actual circumstances. This not only implies "sacrifices", but also offers a farther prize to the real self, cleaned from the remnants of a PAST never really passed.
Sensible Experience(See the Modena 2005 Festival della FilosofiaregardingSenses)
Affections should remain within the integrity of sensible experience, which is the condition to obtain the fullness of existence without ever assuming the faulty feature of sensorial deprivation: the inhibition by contact typical of rationalizing processes, thus avoiding the paradox of the dignity of reason that denies the integrity of the person.
Then: to can master every sensible experience and to recognize physically the environment mean to enter with sufficient assurance free from useless apprehensions in the outside world either of space or even of unforeseeable future; but if this allows to blossom and to bear fruit also in successive EVOLUTION, furthermore improves the PRESENT to blossom in every bit of time, to charge every moment with intensity and fullness. This personal integrity ripens at long last to strengthen the whole life almost till it would seem longer since more plentiful. This basic completeness resume moment by moment the true essence of the SELF assuming the very leading place from which to begin every deed with the continual supply of the completeness of senses and emotions: main tools working as aperture to the external world. From a well organized real inner world it is easy to start not only to express oneself but to acknowledge and make use of external circumstances: this leading SELF should then be ever the "first person" on conjugation of verbs, established by the power to recognize and declare I LIKE IT/ I DON'T LIKE or I DISLIKE IT denoting and underlining its dynamic characteristic, its continuing exclusive competence.
Furthermore when well ascertained, the powerful reality of the I like it is for ever and for a lot of situations an effectual improving life-style; but not only a platform to start: after I like it, I take itit is ENOUGH one, the wholeness of satisfaction gives the input to move towards other, differentiate more ample aims.
Hence moving sturdily from such solidified background, to open the horizons Beyond the pleasure principle becomes not only possible besides suitable: it leads alluring to learn how to master themselves either challenging inner forces or subduing inner needs; it tempts eagerly to enlarge limits step by step by trials and errors, by repetitive pedantic little deeds, by forcing inner possibilities and overcoming vulnerabilities: changing them on willpower to reach aims. In Freudian terms one can describe the real passage from the first complex - the "oral" one -  leaving its "relay-race baton" to the second - the "anal" one. And, when attained the basic outset of the "relay-race" of complexes, to can display for the whole life the expansion of human possibilities will be assured: beginning from the solemn regularity of childhood such vital project should any way utterly accompany the every one's whole life.

SUPERSTITIONS? TABOOS?

Lack of self-reliance, self-respect, consciousness of responsibility?

"Fear" believes to keep safe on building barricades: and then narrows spaces, knowledge, relationship and understanding... and widens on return new fearfulness and dependency.

Rather than towards the fullness of existence and its FREE CHOICES, several deadly equivocations were born and continue to rage on the wave of philosophical - and religious or pseudo-religious - theories which for Centuries have characterized our Civilization. the human leaning - or perhaps the consequence of having been deprived independently from individual cultural level - moves in the direction of narrowing fears, lack of self-confidence and interests, besides towards superstition and deceit hierachycally transmitted.

Several fanciful, extemporaneous superstitions spread continually, having as object to adore a whichever element or a fancy whatsoever, a stereotyped end to pursue or in which blindly to believe.
If language mirrors symbolically reality, unfortunately too often is a main path to more mislead facts: several words are currently used in an inaccurate way in turn foreboding renewed "deprivations". Some wrong meanings could be downright idealized as IDOLS to which to tribute a superstitious adoration. For instance rational, rationality and comprehend derive from exact Latin terms meaning linear - and then only approximate and defective and even "artificial" systems of measurement: ratio = ruler; whilst comprehend send to a capacity measure. Even will, as a word and a concept, joins the confusion of inflated meanings instead to use INTENTIONALITY that presupposes the underlined emotion governing the direct action moment by moment. (How often someone who is prey to the emotion known as desolation - when all becomes useless and meaningless - is accused of being bereft of will, how often one praises as courage and strength the almost somnambulistic "willpower" in someone proceeding unperturbed, detached from all sensations and cautions!)

FOURTH DIMENSION

The concept of BEING rightfully belongs to PHILOSOPHY, like the other fundamental and wider principle: the essence of TIME, of changes, of evolutions, in short of the FOURTH DIMENSION of everything, and even more of the living beings. Besides the rearing of babies is a turning point in the running flow of generations, preparing the future "being" of adulthood, and at the same time developing the composite world of the grown-ups' works.
Hence every fact and subjectively every moment of life move into MEMORY and its -  conscious – materialising into continuous and renewed EXPERIENCE.

Albert Einstein and the fourth dimension
An anecdote which perhaps has never actually happened, but which is anyway very instructive.
An old geometric riddle, presented as an anecdote in Maria Toffetti’s book, easily explains the concept of fourth dimension, too often not accepted or confined to irrational vagueness, a concept which would instead seem obvious both on a general level and, even more so, on the level of the living beings’ existence.
Albert Einstein, too, dealt with tetrahedrons: at a congress, having been criticised for his unexpected concept of a space-time in four dimensions, he asked his colleagues to build four equilateral triangles with six tooth pickers. Nobody in the room managed to place on a plane the tooth pickers to form the required triangles, which is, as a matter of fact, impossible. So Einstein built a tetrahedron with the six sticks and commented: “If you can’t use the third dimension, with which you make experiments every day, how can you hope to understand the fourth?”
